As a natural health remedy that’s been gaining lots of attention in recent months, CBD oil is a popular product among our patients in Maryland. At Outreach Health and Wellness, we assist patients located close to our Wheaton-Silver Spring, Georgia Avenue, and Wheaton-Glenmont clinics in obtaining their medical marijuana cards. However, our efforts don’t end there. We’re also here to provide you with medically-inspired advice on using products such as CBD oil. If you feel as though this is the right avenue for you and your condition, it’s a good idea to learn more about what it is, where you can purchase it, and the conditions it benefits.
Can you use CBD oil in Maryland?
Maryland’s residents benefit from medical marijuana licenses, which means you can use CBD oil in Maryland. However, it’s worth knowing that most CBD oil doesn’t fall under the marijuana classification.
CBD stands for cannabidiol. While it comes from the same family of plants as medical marijuana, there are some key differences. It’s the cannabidiol element of this oil that allows our patients to experience relief from certain elements of their conditions, such as anxiety, insomnia, and the seizures that arise from some forms of epilepsy. CBD oil doesn’t contain the same levels of THC as medical marijuana, though. Although there are trace elements of THC present, there isn’t enough for those who use it to experience the same psychoactive effects they encounter when using medical marijuana. The levels of THC present in medical marijuana are safe, but we recognize that some of our patients may want to try a product that doesn’t feature them.
What can CBD oil achieve?
The human body has what is known as an endocannabinoid system. This system comes with receptors that are located throughout the human body, including the brain. When it’s stimulated correctly, it plays a positive role in maintaining a sense of wellness and balance, which medical professionals refer to as homeostasis.
Two of the areas that the endocannabinoid system plays a particularly strong role in are hormonal functions and stress regulation. In our experience, when our patients use CBD oil to treat certain conditions, this can work to their advantage. The right stimulation of this system can result in a better night’s sleep, fewer feelings of anxiety, and a reduction in depression symptoms. However, we’re also aware that the endocannabinoid system works at its best when the right number of omega-3 fatty acids are present. As such, we encourage our patients to consider whether they can make dietary changes that promote a better omega-3 balance.
Which conditions can CBD oil treat?
One of the most reassuring elements of CBD oil use is that the World Health Organization recognizes how it doesn’t come with the risk of dependency. As a result, our patients who suffer from certain conditions feel confident in using it.
There are two severe forms of epilepsy that are often unresponsive to anti-seizure medication that can benefit from CBD oil: Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. As the link we just cited highlights, various studies have illustrated how patients with those syndromes experience far fewer seizures when using CBD oil, even if they’ve remained unresponsive to anti-seizure medication.
Individuals who suffer from insomnia and anxiety may also experience a better night’s sleep and fewer anxious feelings when they use these oils. In the past, addiction-forming medications such as benzodiazepines were used as first-line treatments. As a non-addictive alternative, CBD oil could prove safer.
At Outreach Health and Wellness, we help our patients throughout Maryland access medical marijuana and CBD oil with the right professional guidance. If you would like to use either of these products with the help of a physician, call us at 240-338-3456.
