Why you need an annual wellness exam even if you're not sick

Getting an annual wellness exam is one of the best ways to take a proactive approach to your health and identify early signs of bigger issues. Here at Outreach Health and Wellness, we provide convenient annual wellness exams for residents of Annapolis and other areas throughout Maryland.

In this article, we’re sharing why it’s so important to get an annual checkup, even if you don’t feel sick:

1. You can find out if you have nutritional deficiencies

Nutritional deficiencies are more common than you might think, especially among certain demographics. According to the Centers for Disease Control, approximately 30 million Americans are deficient in vitamin B6, with high rates among non-Hispanic blacks and those older than 60.

People with more advanced cases of vitamin B6 deficiency may develop dermatitis, cracked lips, depression, brain fog, weakened immune function, and much more. But it’s possible to have a deficiency with no noticeable symptoms at all.

Vitamin D deficiency is also fairly common, with approximately 23 million Americans being severely deficient. Mexican Americans and non-Hispanic blacks are much more likely to be deficient in vitamin D, because darker pigmented skin makes it difficult to create vitamin D from sunlight exposure.

The good news is that these and other deficiencies are easily treated through supplementation. This is why it’s so important to have an annual wellness exam. Even if you don’t feel ill, you may have an underlying nutritional deficiency that can put you at risk of developing more serious conditions.

2. You’ll get essential screening for cancer and age-related conditions

You probably take your car to get serviced regularly to make sure everything’s in working order. Well, your health is no different, and you should take a similar approach by making an appointment for an annual wellness exam — whether or not you feel sick.

At your appointment, your doctor will conduct an overall assessment of your health, as well as screen you for potential cancers. For instance, women typically undergo a Pap smear, which is a procedure that involves collecting cells from the cervix in order to screen for cervical cancer. Likewise, men are usually screened for prostate, colorectal, and testicular cancer. In the event anything abnormal is detected, this gives patients and their doctors the chance to treat serious conditions as early as possible.

3. Annual wellness exams empower you to take control of your health

Although you might not necessarily feel sick, you may have noticed some odd symptoms throughout the year. Or, perhaps you want to start a family soon and have questions about fertility. In either case, having an annual wellness exam allows you to address any questions or concerns you may have about your health.

Here at Outreach Health and Wellness, our providers take the time to carefully listen to patients’ concerns. Based on your needs, we can either design a treatment plan or refer you to a specialist. Our goal is to empower you to take charge of your health and achieve optimal wellness.
